Most business owners don't need another acronym. They need to know what actually moves the needle for their website.
SEO, AI SEO, and GEO are not competing strategies. They're layers of the same foundation — and understanding how they relate helps you decide where to invest.
What Is Traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO is the practice of optimizing your website to rank in Google's organic results. It covers technical health, content quality, on-page structure, internal linking, and authority building.
If your website isn't ranking in Google today, traditional SEO is still where you start. Google remains the largest search engine by far, and the fundamentals — clean code, fast pages, clear content, proper structure — haven't changed.
What Is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the extension of traditional SEO to account for AI-powered search experiences. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation, those systems pull information from the web — including your website.
AI SEO asks: Is my website structured in a way that AI models can understand, trust, and reference? It builds on traditional SEO but adds emphasis on entity clarity, structured data, and content that answers questions directly.
What Is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing specifically for AI-generated answers. While traditional SEO targets ranking positions, GEO targets being cited or recommended inside AI-generated responses.
GEO focuses on how clearly your business is defined as an entity, how easily your content can be extracted and quoted, and how consistently your information appears across the web.
So What Does a Business Actually Need?
Most businesses need all three — but in the right order:
- Start with solid SEO. If your site is slow, disorganized, or technically broken, nothing else matters.
- Make it AI-ready. Add structured data, clarify your entity, and format content so AI systems can extract and cite it.
- Monitor your AI visibility. Track whether AI platforms are referencing your business, and adjust based on what you see.
You don't need to choose between SEO and AI search. They work together. A well-optimized site ranks in Google and gets referenced by AI.
The Bottom Line
If a provider tells you to abandon SEO and "focus only on AI search," walk away. The same foundation that ranks you in Google is what AI systems use to understand and recommend you. Skip the foundation and the AI visibility won't come either.
